We have a winner! Fifty bogus bonus points goes to Dick who commented first!
Next question, this one only worth 25 bonus points: WHY was it used to blow tobacco smoke up a person's ass?
And 25 imaginary bonus points goes to Skybill for knowing it was to resuscitate drowning victims!
Enjoy this little description of its purpose from QI in London:
And there you have it! Trust me, I'm not just blowing smoke up yer ass!

Hi Xe,
Ah Haaa!!! This gadget made the rounds on the net not too long ago. Somewhere in the late 1800's or so so it was posted it was beliieved that blowing tobacco smoke up someone's butt would revive them from "Drowning!!" The local "Para-medics" of the time would drag the drowning victim out of the pond, river, lake or whatever and use this device on them to try to save their life. I believe it fell from use as I doubt that it was ever credited with working as advetised. I believe the device 'is' credited with popular saying of "Don't blow smoke up my ass!!" refering to someone trying to convince someone else of an untruth!! Yup, look on e-bay, you may find one in "Medical Collectables" "The Tobacco Smoke Enema Administration Device!!" They musta' had some really good 100 octane Tobacco back then!!
