Handyman Tips - Tip on removing a broken key from a lock

If you have broken a key off in a lock and don’t want to call a locksmith to get it out, here is a tip for you. Try to glue the key back together with superglue. You have to be very careful not to glue the key into lock though. I recommend the gel type superglue over the original formula superglue. The original formula is runny and can drip off the key and into the lock. If this happens then you may have glued the key into the lock and it will be very hard if not impossible to get out. You could also glue the lock so that it won’t work even if you get the key out of it. Be very careful.

So here’s how to do it. Put the glue carefully on the broken part of the half of the key that is not stuck in the lock. Look it over carefully to make sure that it will not drip into the lock. Put the key back together as best you can and hold it for a few seconds to give the glue time to set up. If the key doesn’t slide in and out of the lock very easily then you might want to wait longer for a better cure on the glue. Then carefully pull the key out of the lock. Don’t try to turn it unless you have to, and be careful to pull straight out. If you have another key then you should throw the broken key away. If you don’t have a spare key then you can try to make a copy of the broken key at your local hardware store. Gluing a key back together is not a permanent fix so do not use the key any more.
